Fire Extinguisher Safety: What You Need to Know

Most business operations have fire extinguishers located throughout their property. However, many employees do not know or understand when and how to use them.
Here are some important facts about fire extinguishers:

Most models are type ABC, which are good for the great majority of fires except for unique fires such as metal fires.

Employees should be trained on fire extinguishers. They should be taught to aim the stream at the base of the fire, where the fire gets the oxygen it needs to burn.

Employees should know where the fire extinguishers are located, and the office map should indicate the location.

Most office fire extinguishers are rechargeable. They should be checked every 6 months for their charge. If an extinguisher is ever used, it needs to be recharged regardless of how much of the load is used. Once used, a seal is broken in the nozzle and it will slowly lose pressure unless resealed.

Most home use fire extinguishers are not rechargeable, but can last for several years. In order to prolong their life, home fire extinguishers should be turned over to make sure the powder does not solidify in the canister. When the powder drops in the canister (you will feel it), you can put it back in place. A good time to do this is when you check the batteries in your smoke alarms—every 6 months.
- If a home fire extinguisher is used or the gauge on it indicates it has lost its charge, it should be replaced. Before tossing it in the trash, empty the remaining charge by blowing the powder into a paper bag. Once it is empty, it can be placed in the regular trash. A partially loaded fire extinguisher can explode if crushed in the trash.
