Freeze Warnings Could Pose Risks
Freeze warnings issued by the National Weather Service for parts of California and cold weather affecting much of the Southwest could pose risks for farmers throughout the state and the region. Although high winds in California will exaggerate the problem, the cold weather will create problems for growers in Arizona and California that may not experience much wind at all.
California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones recommends farmers review crop insurance policies to prepare for freeze-related losses. California experienced a significant freeze in 2007 that impacted many California growers. As recent as last year, many parts of Arizona experienced low temperatures that caused significant damage to produce. Taking steps to protect produce from any freeze and also having crop coverage readily at hand could save time and effort when the cold weather occurs.
Although crop insurance is not available for all crops, it is available for many specialty crops including stone fruits, nuts, corn, cotton, grapes, raisins, citrus and many others.
