Just in Case of a Natural Disaster

No one wants to face a disaster unprepared, but trying to prepare for every kind of disaster (fire, earthquake, flood, etc.) requires a large investment of time and money. Building a generic disaster kit is a sensible way to go.

Your disaster kit should include:

  • Canned or non-perishable food; manual can opener; first aid kit;  portable radio; flashlight and extra batteries; water; prescription medicines; extra clothing and blankets; emergency cash and credit cards.

After a disaster you will want to contact your insurance company. Getting your claim settled after a disaster may be difficult. With hundreds or even thousands of other claims after a major catastrophe, insurance companies find it difficult to focus on any single customer’s claim. However, there are things you can do to “help” the insurance company handle your claim in a quick and fair manner.

Here are a few tips:

  • Report your claim promptly. Most companies have toll-free telephone lines manned 24/7 and also allow you to leave a message for call back.

  • Protect your property from further damage. Cover the property with blankets or plastic, put a tarp on your damaged roof and board up broken windows. Some companies will have contractors lined up to assist customers with this effort.

  • Keep a record of any repairs you make or any expenses you incur to protect the property as this will be part of the claim. Do not actually repair the property without authorization from the company. The company needs to evaluate the claim before it approves any repairs or payments.

  • If the contents of your home or business are damaged, make a list of damaged and destroyed property. If you prepare a list in advance with the brand name, date of purchase and cost – it will be very helpful. Photos or video of the property are invaluable as they help to prove the existence of the property.

  • Separate damaged and undamaged property so it can be inspected by the adjustor to determine the value of your claim.

Taking these simple steps after you suffer a loss can put you “ahead of the pack” and help get your claim settled quickly and efficiently.
